A NEW ERA
Following the Consecration, construction continued with the completion of the exterior and interior of the church, with carpeting laid out in the sanctuary, pews installed, walls finished and numerous other details. There were still continuous and serious financial difficulties and numerous attempts to raise the necessary funds such as emergency fundraisers, pledge systems and others. St. Sarkis church opened for services on November 18, 1990, with Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian celebrating the first Badarak since the Church was consecrated, assisted by Very. Rev. Anoushavan Tanielian and Archpriest Asoghig Kelejian. The choir under the direction of the new choirmaster, Archdeacon Sarkis Apelian, and the organist Gail D'Onofrio participated in the service. Afterwards, a thanksgiving Banquet took place at Terrace on the Park with Jack Chadrjian as MC.
January 27, 1991, marked the first time in six years that St. Sarkis Name Day Badarak was celebrated in the beautiful new church, however, because the Church Hall was not completed, the parish was again forced to have the traditional luncheon outside, at Douglaston Manor. On Sunday September 15, 1991, on the Feast of Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Very. Rev. Anoushavan Tanielian celebrated the Badarak and delivered his first pastoral message. Appointed by Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian as the new Pastor of St. Sarkis Church, Hayr Soorp accepted the responsibility of providing the spiritual guidance and leadership which would be needed to reorganize the St. Sarkis Parish.
Excerpts from his First Sermon: " The Feast of the Exhalation of the Cross (Khachverats ) has a special meaning for me today, because His Eminence Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian, Prelate, has appointed me as the Pastor of St. Sarkis Church. It is indeed a challenging task to shepherd a dispersed flock, while completing the Doctoral requirements at Colombia University. However, to avoid being simply a preacher, but to be a bearer of the Cross as well, I accepted this position for the sake of the progress of Christ's Flock, the parish of St. Sarkis. Part of my Knowledge and experience in the service of building up the community, by creating comprehensive programs. which I plan to Accomplish by:
With the blessing of God, with the cooperation and dedication of every single member and friend of our Parish, I believe that St. Sarkis Church will continue to be a beacon of light for Faith, Hope and Love."
From June 1991 through December 1991, there was an explosion of activities. Inspired by the appointment of Very. Rev. Anoushavan Tanielian as Pastor of St. Sarkis Church, auxiliary bodies revitalized past activities and introduced new ones: the Ladies Guild organized a Garden Party; the newly named Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School opened its doors in the new school building; there was a Church picnic at Plattsdeutch Park; St. Sarkis Basketball program was started; Bible study classes began; Sunday School opened; the Choir held elections; there were several get together parties; blessing of stained glass windows, and holiday Church services. With 1991 coming to close, the members of the Board of Trustees and Board of Wardens in cooperation with all auxiliary bodies, their members and parishioners were well on the road to recovery. Like relay runners, the year 1992 was handed the blazing torch of 1991 with the expectation that it will build on the momentum gathered in the previous year. and 1992, delivered, indeed, an outstanding performance.
The first major event of 1992, was Saint Sarkis Name Day. This was a special occasion because for the first time both Badarak and Luncheon were held at St. Sarkis Church. His Eminence, Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian was the celebrant and several acolytes were ordained. Although not quite finished, with bare concrete floors, paint barely dry on the walls, and the kitchen almost equipped, the Hall was ready to receive the hundreds of enthusiastic St. Sarkis parishioners, who after almost 7 years of waiting were finally COMING HOME. the MC for this event was Edward Bekian.
Last minute preparations and details were carefully monitored, including work done by the construction crew headed by Kenny Chadrjian to make the Hall presentable and the kitchen functional, and Haroutiun Zilelian helping with last minute construction matters. The decorations of the Hall included over a hundred paper flowers secured on branches of birch trees. This was truly a "Family Affair" with young and old working together. The young people served as waiters, the kitchen was overflowing with Ladies Guild members preparing the plates and it was not surprising to see some of the attendees eating in the kitchen for lack of available seats in the hall. Filled with people, the entire Church was pulsating with life and energy.
Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees and Board of Wardens played a major part in the reconstruction efforts of the Church. In the intervening period between the burning of the church and 1996, the Prelacy Executive Council appointed a "caretaker" Board to guide and nurture the Church through these difficult times. We would like to acknowledge its members.
