BIBLE 101 |

On the spring of 2005 at the direction of the Rev. Fr. Nareg, a small group of young adults gathered for an open conversation about how to get the young generation of our church involved and enthusiastic about becoming a core part of the church community. The gathering was by all accounts a success because through this gathering and open table discussion, the idea of a Bible Study for young adults bloomed, and took on the name “Bible 101”.
The idea behind “Bible 101” was to educate the youth about our own church services, traditions, ceremonies and scriptures as well as to study the bible. Several weeks after the initial brainstorming meeting, the first Bible 101 class was held on a Monday evening at St. Sarkis Church. As the initial group’s enthusiasm increased, and the frequency of the classes increased, word of this fantastic new activity at the church began to spread and attendance began to grow. Each new class now brings with it, not only new lessons but new faces as well. During each class, select passages of the bible are read out loud and then analyzed by the group, under the guidance of Fr. Nareg. After the passages are read and interpreted, the ‘students’ then have the opportunity to engage in an open question and answer session. As the classes have gone on, the reading of the passages chosen by Fr. Nareg have without fail, lead to increasingly more intense and dynamic open table conversations amongst those in attendance.
As the months have gone by, our Bible 101 class has become much more than simply an educational activity, it has served to form a bond and create a sense of community among the youth of the church as well. Our activities have expanded beyond the “classroom” to include social and spiritual activities as well. In early December 2005, after a Sunday church services, members of Bible 101 gathered together to decorate the church for Christmas. As a group, we decorated a beautiful Christmas tree and nativity scene inside the church and decorated the outside with spectacularly festive Christmas décor as well. Although the weather outside was cold, the hearts of the individuals that spent hours together listening to Christmas music and decorating our church were brimming with warmth.
A trip to see the Radio City Christmas spectacular on December 16, followed by a visit to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was another social activity of the group.
During the Lenten Period, we saw it fit to watch the movie “Jesus of Nazareth”, we not only watched it, but we also discussed it and compared it to the 4 different Gospels. Also, during the Lenten Period members of “Bible 101” attended the Vesper Services held on Monday nights before our scheduled Bible Study.
Besides becoming involved in the Church Community spiritually, some of the members of this group have become involved in the St. Sarkis 16th Anniversary and Fr. Nareg’s 1st Anniversary as Pastor of our Church and not only were we involved behind the scenes, but 2 of our members served as Masters of Ceremony.
On August 21 2006, Bible 101 Bible 101 had it's first "Open House" dinner party. It was an occasion for the members to socialize on the Church grounds and a chance to recruit new potential Members. 40 Young adults attended this event.
“Bible 101” is now held every other Monday at St. Sarkis Church, classes begin at 8:30 pm and all individuals ages 18-40 are welcomed and encouraged to attend this spiritually, educationally and socially enriching activity.
