THE EARLY YEARS

DESTRUCTION TO RESURRECTION

Thirty eight years ago, the founding fathers of Saint Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church began a sacred journey in the service of the Lord, their spi-ritual mission guided by the creative vision of the believers. St. Sarkis Armenian church overcame numerous difficulties and major transformations metamorphosing from a simple parish house in Bayside to a magnificent edifice in Douglas-ton. Today, St. Sarkis Church is colorful collage sparkling brilliantly.

On the night of Tuesday May  21, 1985, many parishioners of the St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Bayside, watching the 10:00 o'clock news, were horrified to see their beloved second home engulfed in flames.

The blaze was touched off by a bolt of lightning during an electrical storm, and spread so quickly that it became a "three alarm fire" in only 12 minutes.

The fire started in the bell tower and spread to the sanctuary, which became an inferno.

A NEW ERA

Following the Consecration, construction continued with the completion of the exterior and interior of the church, with carpeting laid out in the sanctuary, pews installed, walls finished and numerous other details. There were still continuous and serious finan-cial difficulties and numerous attempts to raise the nece-ssary funds such as emergen-cy fundraisers, pledge sys-tems and others.
