Reported By: Ms. Nevair Oranjian
On Friday, November 13, 2015, the St. Sarkis Church Youth Club gathered for their monthly meeting. Youth Club members experienced the first of many sessions with the Youth Mentoring Program of St. Sarkis Church called INSPIRE. Dr. Alex Meneshian introduced the program to the participants and spoke about Leading a Successful Life. Key topics included "Bee +", stay true to yourself, and set realistic goals. Dr. Meneshian engaged the participants by asking if they could guess one ofthe tips for leading a successful life and asking questions about their future goals. Dr. Meneshian also shared an abridged version of his story for reaching his goal of becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Youth Club members were allowed time for questions, and when the topic of attending college arose, Mrs. Seta Megherian shared her story of choosing to attend an out-of-state university before transferring to a local university. Questions were asked about paying for college and student loans, Der Nareg asked Ms. Nevair Oranjian to speak of her experiences, as she is a recent college graduate. Regarding the topic, Ms. Oranjian said that she quickly learned how to manage her finances as a result of post-graduate expenses, and attended a university before transferring to Queens College, CUNY for their psychology program. Participants were also asked to share professions about which they would like to learn more.
Some examples of professions mentioned were lawyer, mechanical engineer, veterinarian, marine biology, trauma psychology, and nutrition and dietetics. Der Nareg suggested that, if possible, youth club members could shadow professionals in their dream fields. Interest was also expressed for a networking event in which Youth Club members could meet and speak with a variety of professionals. The meeting ended by thanking Dr. Meneshian for his time and lecture. The night ended with attendees indulging in snacks and socializing with each other.
