The Feast of The Assumption of St. MaryAugust 16 2015On Sunday, August 16, 2015, the community of St. Sarkis Church observed the Feast of the Assumption (Verapokoum) of the Holy Virgin Mary. Fr. Nareg Terterian celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon. Following the Divine Liturgy, the ceremony of blessing of the grapes and Harissa took place.
Under the Leadership of Mr. Karnig Nercesian Harissa was prepared with the help of Mrs. Ani Nercessian, Mrs. Loucine Megherian, Mrs. Dori Shishmanian and Yeretsgin Annie Terterian. Tan was donated and prepared by Mrs. Dori Shishmanian and sandwiches were prepared by the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church. Grapes were donated by Mr. & Mrs. Edward and Alina Kochoumian and family, Mr. & Mrs. Varoujan & Louiza Kalousdian and family along with Mrs. Naomi Megerian. The Blessing of the Grapes is based on the Biblical teaching “So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me...You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 26:10). In the Armenian Church, the offering of first fruit takes the form of a thanksgiving and blessing, and then the faithful consume the fruit. Harissa, the traditional Armenian recipe dating back to St. Gregory the Illuminator, began at St. Sarkis Church nine years ago and became a popular fellowship for parishioners. |
