On Sunday, May 24, at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church, Fr. Nareg reflected on the Feast of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the great culmination of the Resurrection season. Drawing from the Book of Acts, he explored the dramatic transformation of the disciples from fearful men hiding in the upper room into courageous witnesses of the Gospel. Focusing on the gift of language and communication, he emphasized that the Holy Spirit restores our ability to truly speak, listen, reconcile, and connect, not only with one another, but also with God. He reflected on how broken communication damages relationships, families, and communities, while healthy communication becomes a sacred expression of the Spirit’s presence within us. The sermon also challenged modern misunderstandings of courage. In contrast to impulsive behavior, reckless self-promotion, and abuse of power, Der Nareg reminded the faithful that true courage is the willingness to stand for truth, bring healing, and create positive change in the world. Concluding with Christ’s warning about closing one’s heart to the Holy Spirit, he encouraged the congregation to remain spiritually open, attentive, and receptive to God’s transforming presence. As baptized Christians who have received the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we are called to keep those gifts alive through faithful living, courageous witness, and loving communication.
